Devious Journal Entry

I'm a multi-media artist concentrating mostly on colored pencil portraits (two tone and full color) and Wearable Art (hand painted with permanent acrylic fabric paint). I also paint portraits that "play hide and seek" in a colorful, abstract watercolor background.

ABOUT ME...

I don’t remember a time in my life when I wasn’t creating art. I grew up on a farm, surrounded by beauty…corn and hay fields, woods, cloud filled skies, horses, cattle, chickens, goats, cats and dogs. (OK, so the cows and goats left something to be desired). I drew constantly as a child and teen. If I could see it…I could draw it, but my favorite was drawing horses. In high school my art teacher “begged” me to draw anything other than horses….so I switched to faces, my teacher was thrilled. Little did he know I merely traded one obsession for another.

I graduated from Ohio University with a BFA in drawing, painting, illustration and art history. By the time my senior year rolled around, my instructors “begged” me to draw anything but portraits (notice a pattern yet?). But I love the beauty I see in every face. My favorite and also most challenging aspect of portraiture is showing who is behind the eyes….”Windows to the Soul”. I always start with the eyes and if I don’t get them right, I throw it out and start all over. A little nerve-racking if I’m paying more attention to technique than the distinct way someone’s eyes show their history and feelings. Looking into their eyes and seeing into their soul…joy, love, pleasure, pain, contentment, self-awareness and fear are all indicators of the person before me.

PORTRAITS...

I’ve been a portrait artist for the better part of my adult life. I use permanent colored pencils on archival quality cotton paper to achieve realistic portraits. Each portrait takes between 8 and 90 hours to complete (depending on the amount of detail in the clothing and how many people are portrayed in the portrait). I create two types of commissioned portraits...traditional and contemporary portraits drawn over an abstract watercolor background. I enjoy drawing portraits of babies, children, teens, adults and "four-pawed children” (pets).

ABSTRACTS...

A number of years ago I tried some loose, abstract watercolors as a way to broaden my creativity and to relax more around the artistic process. I found them very freeing, spontaneous and creative especially after having been so precise and detailed with my portraits. It was wonderful, exhilarating and…it was missing something….(but you already know what I’m going to say it was missing)…faces! (a very definite pattern). So I added them over top of the abstracts! They play "hide and seek" as I fade them in and out of the vibrant colors. Then I added figures because the human body is perfection and beauty. Just like every face, every physical body is a lovely part of who we each are.

ARTWEAR...

My ArtWear designs are "one-of-a kind" paintings on denim clothing. They are hand painted in multiple layers and take many hours to complete. Think of it as "un-stretched canvas that you wear". I use permanent acrylic fabric paints along with dye pens for the very fine detail. Some of my denim pieces have "attachments" incorporated onto them...glue-on Swarovski Crystals, metal studs and sequins. I also use Swarovski crystal beads, feathers and other types of beads that are hanging from small removable lanyards that can be taken off for washing and drying the jeans and then be re-attached afterward. I paint Sculptures, Portraits, Pets, Floral, Abstract, Religious, Symbols, Motorcycles, Motorcycle Engines, Original Henna designs, Western, Asian, Art Deco, Native American, Celtic, Egyptian and other cultural designs. The sky's the limit.....if you can imagine it....I can paint it.

After completion, even though the fabric paint I use is "permanent" after drying, I heat set and then rinse in a cool water, vinegar bath to "thrice-set" the artwork. My denim paintings are machine or hand washable...hand washing (or dry cleaning) is recommended, to add to the longevity of the painting.

Almost all of my painted denim clothing is for sale except for the jeans...those are "commission only" because jeans are such a personal fit. I can paint on "your" jeans (that you send to me) any design you like including any design that you see an example of, here on Deviant Art. I also paint commissioned ArtWear on jackets, t-shirts, cotton sneakers, aprons, dresses, totes and backpacks that clients send me. Send me a pair of your favorite jeans or jacket along with your ideas and I'll design your own "painted-on jeans" and you'll have a "moving exhibit of wearable art".

MYSTICAL ART...

My Mystical Art is very personal and is a synthesis of studying various religions/ancient mysteries. I've also created my own "contemplation/study" diagrams based on those studies. Some of my inspiration has come from Christianity, Gnostic Christianity, Mystic Christianity, Mystic Judaism, The Kabbalah, The Divine Feminine, The Sepher Yetzirah, The Egyptian Mysteries, Hermetic Philosophy and The Western Mysteries.

DRAWING LESSONS...

I teach drawing lessons to children, teens and adults in the Seattle, WA area. Please see my brochure [link] for more information on group and private classes.

DIGITAL ART...

As for my digital art in Photoshop….it’s a creative process where I can get lost. Time, food and sleep take a back seat to it. (Clearly, another obsession for me) but then again, drawing on a sheet of paper always has the same effect too.

Thanks for visiting my gallery.
I hope you enjoy seeing what I love creating.
